Asphalt Calculator

How Much Do You Need?

Looking for the quickest, most accurate way to calculate the total amount of asphalt required? Whether you’re fixing potholes, doing utility trench repairs, resurfacing a driveway, or have a larger project such as a bridge surfacing in mind, our asphalt estimator will help in calculating your asphalt requirements when using EZ Street Ambient Asphalt technology.

Your fast asphalt volume estimation output can be viewed by ton, bag or bucket with our calculator. You can also order asphalt online instantly based on your calculation.

When using the calculation tool, do not confuse tonne (metric ton) with ton (short ton). The metric ton, or tonne referred to here is 1000 kg by the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).

Effortlessly measure the right amount of asphalt needed for your repair project with our Job Calculator.

By simply entering the width, depth, and length of the area to be repaired, our intuitive tool provides you with the precise amount of product required to get the job done right.

Asphalt Calculation Basics

The free asphalt calculator on this page helps determine the total cubic metres required for an asphalt job, by using the known surface area to be covered and the depth. We’ll get into more detail below about how to determine the required thickness (depth) of the asphalt layer depending on the intended use.

Important to note here, is that it’s not just a matter of LxWxH to calculate asphalt volume, as asphalt is compacted during installation, which affects the amount needed. With something like pothole repair, leave a small crown above the level, and EZ Street can be compacted with a shovel, car tyre or just traffic —  no machinery required!

Manual Asphalt Calculation Method

If you prefer to calculate manually, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the length and width of the area in meters.
  2. Multiply the length by width to get the square meters.
  3. Multiply the square meters by the desired depth in centimetres.
  4. Divide the result by 100 to convert to cubic meters.
  5. Multiply by 2.4 to convert cubic meters to metric tons.
  6. Multiply by 1.05 to account for compaction and potential waste.

For example, if your area is 10 meters long, 5 meters wide, and you want a depth of 50mm:

  1. Area: 10 m long × 5 m wide = 50 square meters
  2. Depth: 50 mm = 0.05 m
  3. Volume: 50 m² × 0.05 m = 2.5 cubic meters
  4. Weight: 2.5 m³ × 2.4 tonnes/m³ = 6 metric tons
  5. Final estimate: 6 × 1.05 = 6.3 tonnes of asphalt needed

As mentioned above, you can see the amount of EZ Street Ambient Asphalt needed by ton, bag or bucket with our calculator.

How much asphalt will be enough?

Please note that, while we’ve endeavoured to make our calculation tool as accurate as possible for a fast estimate of asphalt needed for your project, it is still only an estimate.

Consider allowing for a tolerance of around 5% more than is specified. After all, estimates are tricky and even vary around how many kilometres of asphalt/sealed roads there are around Australia — anywhere from 270,000 to 355,000 kilometres.

Asphalt Depth Recommendations – Metric

How deep does asphalt need to be for a driveway, bridge, high-traffic area or other application?

The exact thickness required may vary based on several factors, including expected traffic load and vehicle weights, soil conditions and subgrade stability, and local weather conditions. The below is a rough guide only, and we recommend checking with local council regulations before installing asphalt on public or private land.

Driveways/carports:

  • 50-75 mm for residential
  • 75-100 mm for commercial

Bridge surface works:

  • 40-50 mm for overlays
  • Up to 100 mm for full-depth repairs

Pothole repairs:

  • Fill to match the surrounding surface depth

Utility trench repairs:

  • 75-100 mm, matching the existing road surface depth

Footpaths

  • 30mm depth

What type of asphalt should I use for my project?

This asphalt calculator is for our product: EZ Steet Ambient Asphalt, which combines the durability of hot mix with the convenience of cold mix. It is suitable for most small to medium-sized applications, especially where a walk- or car-ready surface is needed as a matter of priority. Other types of asphalt include:

  • Hot Mix Asphalt requires heating for application and is typically used in large-scale on main roads and heavy-use industrial areas.
  • Warm Mix Asphalt is produced at lower temperatures and often used at overnight projects.
  • Cold Mix Asphalt can be applied without heating, ideal for repairs and small projects.
  • Driveway Mix Asphalt is best suited to driveways and parking lots.
  • Porous Asphalt is light on sand and heavy on stone, creating more gaps for better drainage.
